LESSON 6
Sequencing
Okay, this is step two. Now that your child has learned a new letter -- what happens next? They learn how to sequence the letter within a word.
It's Time To Play
"REPEAT AFTER ME"
- Get out your blackboards and chalk.
- Divide the board into quarters.
- Put two short lines in each quarter.
This is all practiced with your child in the beginning until they are familiar with the set up.
- Number each quarter -- 1 - 2 - 3 - 4
- The one rule is: your child must say the word after you do.
They can repeat the word as many times as they need to after you have pronounced it.
Here's how to play... "Repeat after me"
Since we are working on m let's start with sequencing that.
- Say the word mountain.
- Your child repeats the word.
- Ask, "Where did you put your lips together, at the beginning of the word, (Point to the first line in Quarter #1) or at the end?" (Point to the last line in Quarter #1)
- Let your child repeat the word as many times as needed before deciding.
- Have your child write the letter m on the appropriate line in Quarter #1.
********
- Next say another word, perhaps alarm.
- Your child repeats the word.
- Ask, "Where did you put your lips together, at the beginning of the word, (Point to the first line in Quarter #2) or at the end?" (Point to the last line in Quarter #2)
- Let your child repeat the word as many times as needed before deciding.
- Have your child write the letter m on the appropriate line in Quarter #2.
********
- Then do the same with two more words, perhaps music and trim.
Now is when you watch to make sure the handwriting is to a high standard. Nag if you must. Stress the physical act of saying the word. Don't ask "What do you hear?"; instead ask "What did you say?"
Fit this into your child's routine. The game should take only about five minutes. Alternate days where you introduce a new letter, and you play the game.
